Alert Types
Frost Advisory — 33–36°F
Light frost expected. Tender plants and flowers may be damaged. Cover sensitive vegetation or bring potted plants indoors overnight.
Freeze Warning — 32°F or Below
Subfreezing temperatures expected. Significant threat to crops, exposed plumbing, and pets left outdoors. Drip faucets, insulate pipes, bring animals inside.
Hard Freeze Warning — 28°F or Below
Prolonged subfreezing temperatures. Most vegetation killed. Unprotected pipes will freeze and potentially burst. This is the most serious freeze alert.
What to Do When a Frost Alert Hits
Cover Plants
Use frost cloth, old sheets, or cardboard boxes over tender plants. Remove covers in the morning once temperatures rise above freezing.
Protect Pipes
Drip faucets, open cabinet doors under sinks, and insulate exposed pipes. Disconnect garden hoses. One burst pipe can cause thousands in damage.
Pets & Livestock
Bring pets inside. Ensure livestock have windbreaks and unfrozen water. Outdoor animals can suffer frostbite and hypothermia faster than you'd expect.
