RIVERS
ONE APP, EVERYTHING

Stop juggling six different apps during severe weather.

When a storm rolls in, the last thing you need is to open one app for NWS warnings, another for the river gauge, and a browser tab for the radar — plus a separate site to find a working police or fire scanner stream. StormCast pulls every signal that actually matters — severe weather, flood stages, radar, fire weather, AQI — into one console, and lets you paste in your own scanner stream URLs so they live in the same player. Less tab-hopping. Faster decisions. One source of truth on the screen you already carry.

WHAT THIS APP WON'T DO

We're upfront about the limits.

A safety tool is only useful if you know what it is and what it isn't. Four things we want to be clear about.

It doesn't replace NOAA Weather Radio.

When the cell network is down or the power's out, a battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio is still the most reliable line. StormCast complements that — it doesn't replace it.

It doesn't predict the weather.

Every alert, watch, and forecast comes straight from the National Weather Service and its partner agencies. We don't run our own models or claim to know anything the NWS doesn't.

It won't sell your data.

No third-party tracking, no behavioral analytics, no marketing lists. Your email and saved locations exist only to deliver the alerts you signed up for. Any advertising shown will never use your personal data for targeting.

It can't guarantee delivery.

Push notifications depend on your phone, your carrier, OS battery settings, and Google's Firebase service. In a real emergency, never rely on any single source — not us, not anyone. Always have a backup.

If we ever can't deliver on these, you'll hear about it from us first — not from a screenshot on social media.

⚠ DISCLAIMER StormCast is a supplemental awareness tool. It is not a substitute for official emergency communications and should never be relied upon for life-safety decisions. Alert data may be delayed or incomplete. Always confirm severe weather, flooding, and emergency information directly with the National Weather Service, your local emergency management agency, or other official government sources. The developers assume no liability for missed, delayed, or incorrect alerts.
FAQ

Common questions

Do I need a Google account or Play Store to install StormCast?
Yes — StormCast is distributed through Google Play, so a Google account is required to download and install it. This also means updates happen automatically through the Play Store, no manual steps required.
Will StormCast drain my battery?
StormCast is designed to be battery-friendly. All polling runs on our backend every 5 minutes — your device only wakes when there's a payload to deliver. No background polling, no GPS thrash, no constant network chatter. For best results, go to Android Settings → Apps → StormCast → Battery and set it to Unrestricted so Android doesn't delay incoming alerts.
Will I get alerts even when my phone is locked or the app is closed?
Yes. StormCast uses Google's Firebase push notification service to deliver alerts in the background — the same technology used by Gmail and other major apps. As long as your phone has an internet connection, you'll receive severe weather alerts, river flood stage notifications, and emergency feed updates even when the app is completely closed.
How is StormCast different from the built-in weather app?
Most built-in weather apps only show forecasts. StormCast adds real-time NWS severe weather alerts with push notifications, USGS river gauge monitoring with flood stage warnings, your own emergency radio streams (police, fire, EMS scanners you add yourself), hurricane tracking, fire weather alerts, and your own local emergency alert feeds — all in one app built for areas where severe weather and flooding are serious concerns.
How accurate are the weather alerts and river gauge readings?
Alert data comes directly from the National Weather Service and river readings come from USGS Water Resources — both official federal sources. StormCast does not modify or interpret this data; it delivers it to you as quickly as possible. That said, StormCast is a supplemental tool only and should never be relied on for life-safety decisions. Always confirm with official sources during emergencies.
Is StormCast free? Are there ads or subscriptions?
StormCast is free to download. The app may include ads and optional subscription features to support ongoing development. The core severe-weather and emergency alerts will always remain accessible — those are safety features, not premium features.
Is there an iOS version?
Not yet. StormCast launched on Android first because persistent background services are significantly more flexible on Android. An iOS version is on the roadmap — sign up with your email and we'll notify you when it's ready.
What Android version do I need?
StormCast requires Android 8.0 (Oreo) or newer, released in 2017. If your phone was made in the last 6–7 years it will almost certainly be compatible. The app is tested primarily on Android 12–16.
