What Floods at Each Level

Record tide level reached in association with Tropical Storm Irma on September 11th, 2017. The event resulted in 1.37 feet of water above ground level in the Sapelo Island ferry dock building, as determined by a USGS high water mark survey. Also, extensive flooding occurred on Sapelo Island with 1 to 3 feet of water inundating homes on the island and buildings at the University of Georgia Marine Institute on the south end of the island.

At 11.2 feet, flooding of areas around the Sapelo Island ferry dock and the Sapelo Island Visitors Center will expand and deepen. Also, flooding is likely in low lying portions of coastal McIntosh County, including Sapelo Island. At this level, the locations and severity of flooding will likely be driven by a combination of heavy rain, wave action, and storm surge if under the influence of a tropical system.

At 10.7 feet, flooding of the parking area for the Sapelo Island ferry will expand. Water will begin to enter the ferry dock building at the end of Landing Road.
